color
I used to love blues and greens and purples. But lately, big swathes of black on browned old book pages will take my breath away.
I’ve tried to use the colors I used to love but they feel almost wishy washy to me.
Instead I love black, shades of brown and sienna, and white. Maybe I can slip in a grey or mustard but that’s about it.
Puzzled and intrigued, I decided to ask AI what it might mean. This is what I got:
Black suggests a period of internal focus, retreating from external distractions to process deep emotions, seek solitude, or tap into hidden inner power.
Brown symbolizes stability and being rooted. Moving toward these tones suggests you are seeking security, practical foundations, and a stronger connection to the physical world or to nature's quiet rhythms.
White represents purity, truth, and fresh starts. An affinity for white often reflects a desire for a clean slate, mental clarity, or protection from emotional clutter.
Together, these "non-hue" colors imply a desire to strip away chaos, sensory overload, or emotional turbulence.
Wow! That’s it exactly.
This shift started with the Infinity series.
Then moved to the Knickerbocker series.
And now I’ve moved to these larger pieces slightly reminiscent of Minnesota fields. They are full of black!
They feel raw and strong. Stripped of clutter.
Here are two of the pieces with a detail shot of each of them.
Last night I watched the old the John Travolta movie Michael. They’re driving along Iowa roads fringed with cornfields and freshly turned dark earth. Oh . . . my heart skipped a beat – thinking about these new pieces and dark earth.
I’m not sure what I’ll call these pieces yet - Maybe “Home Ground”.
In between all the black, I’m also making these translucent white pieces. They feel like the sky (and maybe time) moving.
I never know for sure what will come next. I work intuitively letting something bigger than me pull me along. No two days are the same.
I’ve posted a few pieces from these series for sale and you can shop them from this link.
Exciting News
I will be teaching another three-day class at Bellissima Art Escapes from August 21 through 23rd. I loved teaching the class in April so much that I asked if Kathie Vezzani, the owner, could squeeze in one more class. Yay! I hope you can come. Here’s the link.
